Great-Grandma Hits Grand Slam with $50,000 Scratch-off Win

City resident finds top prize on Home Run Riches game

A Baltimore City retiree is $50,000 richer because she decided against waiting in line at a busy Maryland Lottery retailer in Annapolis. The avid Pick 3 player had her great-grandson with her when she stopped during rush hour to buy tickets for the next Pick 3 drawing at a 7-Eleven store.

“The line for Lottery was too long,” she said. The 70-year-old left that store and found much better luck at another nearby store – $50,000 worth of luck, in fact. She had $5 left over after buying her Pick 3 tickets at H&B Fuller Wine & Spirits, so she told the clerk to give her a $5 Home Run Riches scratch-off and then returned to her vehicle.

There, unbeknownst to her great-grandson, she scratched the ticket revealed the game’s top prize. “Nobody knows but me and God,” she said.

The prize will enable the mother of one and grandmother of two to bring her mortgage payments up to date and undergo dental treatments to restore her smile.

The Home Run Riches game went on sale in February, and thousands of prizes remain in the game, including two more $50,000 top prizes and three $5,000 prizes.

The lucky Anne Arundel County retailer has reason to celebrate, too. For selling a top-prize scratch-off in the game, H&B Fuller Wine & Spirits, located at 710 Bestgate Road in Annapolis, earns a $500 bonus from the Lottery.
