A Laurel woman found a long trip to visit her favorite ethnic supermarket extra exciting this week — and financially rewarding. Along with ingredients needed to make her Peruvian and Mexican dishes, the lucky lady checked out with a $30,000 Maryland Lottery prize.
She discovered her top-prize win on a $3 Prize Lines scratch-off at the Universal Supermarket in Takoma Park.
The Prince George’s County resident, who recently moved from Montgomery County, was still traveling back to the area to shop when she crossed paths with Lottery luck. The 44-year-old property cleaner said the grocery was just the place to find each ingredient necessary to make her specialties complete. Then, she decided to add the Prize Lines game to her purchase. As she scratched off the instant ticket in the store, the loyal Lottery player’s eyes grew bigger with each zero she uncovered.
Her winnings are a welcome surprise, she said, because her job is experiencing its seasonal slowdown. The extra funds will help her pay bills and living expenses until her work assignments pick up.
Looking to add a dash of winning to your shopping cart? You could find it at the Universal Supermarket at 8639 Flower Avenue in Takoma Park. For selling the top-prize winning scratch-off in the game, the Montgomery County business earns a $300 bonus from the Lottery — equal to 1 percent of the prize. The Prize Lines game also has thousands of unclaimed prizes awaiting discovery, including two more $30,000 top prizes.
