Clerk alerted loyal player to her $10,000 win
Twice a week, Debbie Trunnell of Hagerstown stops by the Myersville Sunoco to purchase Maryland Lottery tickets. Her comfortable routine took an unexpected turn, however, when the 54-year-old walked into the store after the Dec. 13 Powerball drawing.
Bob, the store clerk, told her that he had sold a $10,000 winning Powerball ticket and had a hunch she won! Debbie checked her tickets and saw, to her surprise, that he was correct. She was Maryland’s only $10,000 winner in that drawing and one of 14 $10,000 winners nationwide.
“The last time I won anything was in the ’70s when I won Debby Boone concert tickets,” she said, laughing. “This is so much better!”
To win the prize, the Washington County resident matched numbers on four of the white balls and the Powerball. The computer specialist for the federal government missed the big jackpot by only one number. After verifying her win, she called family members to share her good news.
Debbie has selfless plans for her prize. She will financially help some family members and also give back to her biggest cheerleader – Bob, the store clerk.
“Bob was so excited about my win,” she said. “I’d like to give him a couple hundred dollars for always being so kind.”
