Hanover Man Successful in Search for Big Powerball Win

Claims $50,000 prize in Aug. 12 drawing

Traveling to different Maryland Lottery retailers in hopes of landing a big Powerball prize paid off for a happy Hanover man. He won $50,000 in the Aug. 12 Powerball drawing.

Not a jackpot chaser, the Anne Arundel County resident said his journey to several locations to buy Powerball tickets is just his standard operating procedure. No one won the $356 million jackpot that night but the lucky player was one of three Marylanders who took home a $50,000 prize.

“I don’t like to go to the same stores all the time to buy my tickets,” said the scratch-off and jackpot game fan. “You just never know where you’ll be lucky.”

Luck sure was on the 59-year-old’s side when he stopped at the Manila Mart located at 5023 Garrett Avenue in Beltsville. That’s where his Lottery purchases included the $50,000 winning Powerball ticket.

“I didn’t even check the ticket right away,” said the married father of two adult children. “But, when I did, I couldn’t believe I missed the jackpot by one number.”

A clerk at a local liquor store, the winner said his wife questioned his good fortune.

“She didn’t believe me at first,” he said, smiling. “But, she eventually gave me a big hug.”

He plans to save his winnings and hopes to return to Lottery headquarters to claim the $700 million jackpot in the Aug. 23 drawing. That’s the second largest Powerball jackpot in the history of the game and the second largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.
