Harford County Woman Enjoys Early Holiday Haul

Winner Kim Fender of Darlington celebrates her $30,000 Peppermint Payout win.

On her lucky day, Kim stopped at High’s #81 in Darlington to buy scratch-offs on her way home from Sunday dinner. She selected a few of the holiday scratch-offs that went on sale last week because she had not seen them before and they were lower-price instant tickets, which she prefers to buy. Kim Fender of Darlington started off her Monday in the best way a Maryland Lottery player can imagine — claiming a $30,000 scratch-off prize! The Harford County resident is the first to win the top prize on Peppermint Payout, a new $3 holiday game.

Kim is a new scratch-off player who reinvests her winnings. “I always buy as many tickets as I can with money I won from my old ones,” said the 63-year-old. In fact, when she arrived in the Maryland Lottery Winner’s Circle, Kim had three small prize winning scratch-offs in her purse from the purchase that included her big prizewinner. She’ll cash the trio of games at a Lottery retailer and get another batch of instant tickets in hopes of keeping her lucky streak going!

How will she spend her $30,000 holiday haul? Kim said she plans to pay off bills and then save the rest of her top prize.

Peppermint Payout still has three $30,000 top prizes awaiting discovery. And, it is a member of a family of holiday games that offer players ways to win big by entering non-winning holiday scratch-offs into the Holiday Cash & Dash second-chance promotion. Players can try to win a trip to Chicago for a 90-second warehouse dash, cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 or $300 in scratch-offs. Enter the promotion through My Lottery Rewards.

Kim’s lucky retailer also enjoys a sweet payout. For selling a top-prize scratch-off of $30,000, the store located at 1230 Main Street in Darlington earned a $300 bonus from the Lottery. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.
