Veteran claims $43,018 prize on Superfecta bet
A long-time Racetrax player who visited Maryland Lottery headquarters twice in the last 12 months to claim big prizes did it all over again this week. Richard Joyner of Havre de Grace was smiling as he went through the familiar process, this time cashing in a ticket worth more than $43,000. It’s his biggest score yet!
The retired U.S. Army veteran, who is employed as a civilian at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, claimed prizes of $15,252 on Jan. 7 and $39,697 on Sept. 7, 2018. Despite his experience with Lottery luck, Sunday’s win threw him for a loop.
“I was heading out for a get together but was a little early, so I stopped to play a few games,” he said of his winning visit to the Aberdeen Sunoco. “I bought a Superfecta ticket that covered 11 races and then a few more for individual races.”
Seeing his horses cross the finish line ahead of the pack, Richard checked his tickets and was pleased to see that he won a small prize. “Then, I remembered the Superfecta ticket that included that same race. I dug it out of my pocket and saw that I’d gotten even more horses right on that one.”
He had picked horses 12, 9, 5 and 2 to finish in that order and they did! The payout screen on the Racetrax monitor listed his combination as having produced a $43,018 win. “I couldn’t really believe it so I asked the cashier to check it,” said the 52-year-old. “We were both smiling pretty wide.”
Richard has now found Lottery luck twice at the Aberdeen Sunoco, which is located at 607 South Philadelphia Boulevard in Aberdeen. He and his Lottery pals gather there for coffee and watching Racetrax races.
The loyal player plans to take care of bills and beef up his family’s savings with his latest prize. “I’ll be looking to retire again before too much longer. This will really help make that happen.”
