Wins top prize on Royal Gems scratch-off
A 53-year-old Glenwood woman and her husband have been holding on to something very important for the past three weeks. The Royal Gems scratch-off that she purchased at a Royal Farms store in Glenelg while getting gas was a $1 million winner.
“I had $60 with me and decided to spend $40 on scratch-offs,” said the excited winner, a federal government employee. “I saw the Royal Gems ticket and decided I would use my other $20 to purchase that. I decided to scratch the tickets in my car and couldn’t believe when I saw the million dollar prize. I just kept looking at it and wondering if it was right.”
The next thing she did was call her husband, an HVAC specialist, who thought she was in a car accident because of how frantic she sounded.
The couple was already thinking about retiring in two years, and after visiting with a financial advisor, they’ve learned that possibility is now a reality. In addition to supplementing their retirement, they look forward to paying off their daughter’s college loans, sharing with family members and contributing to their church.
“We are just so happy to be able to help our kids and the rest of our family,” said the gracious winner. “It’s a great feeling.”
The Royal Farms store that sold the ticket is located at 3901 Ten Oaks Road in Glenelg. For selling the winning ticket, the store will receive a $1,000 bonus. The $20 Royal Gems game launched in September and one of its $1 million top prizes is still waiting to be claimed. There are also two remaining $50,000 prizes, 10 $10,000 prizes and thousands of prizes ranging from $20 to $5,000.
