Winning ticket bought in Upper Marlboro provides ‘icing on the cake’ of spring celebrations

For “Howard U Mom,” winning a $50,000 top prize in the Maryland Lottery’s Bonus Match 5 game on April 5 isn’t her only reason for celebrating this spring.

“My daughter is graduating, so this is just the icing on the cake!” said the happy winner while claiming her prize April 9 at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

Having a daughter in school at Howard University in Washington, D.C. also explains how the 47-year-old Harrisburg, Pa. native ended up buying a winning Maryland Lottery ticket. She stopped at 7-Eleven #27075 at 4704 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro and bought a $4 ticket with three quick-pick selections and three selections of her own. Her quick-pick numbers won!

“Howard U Mom” belongs to a group of parents in the Keystone State’s capital area with children attending Maryland colleges and universities. She is a frequent visitor to the area. The happy mom enjoys playing lottery games in her home state and when she travels. She has hit the Pennsylvania Lottery in the past, but, as she explains, “Not like this!”

A Maryland friend tipped her off to the fun of playing Bonus Match 5. “They said, ‘That’s the good one!’ ” she recalls. It turns out, for “Howard U Mom,” Bonus Match 5 was a very good game!

She has no specific plans for her winnings, but said the $50,000 prize will come in handy. “I’m going to get caught up on life,” she said. This is her second daughter to graduate from college, which is an expensive endeavor.

For selling a winning top-prize Bonus Match 5 ticket, the Prince George’s County 7-Eleven earns a bonus of $500 from the Lottery. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize total.
