Towson couple takes home first big prize on $30 scratch-off
A Towson couple who share a love of Maryland Lottery scratch-offs became the first players in the state to win big playing the Lottery’s first $30 instant ticket. The sleep-deprived pair can thank their nine-week-old howling puppy for the predawn discovery of their $50,000 prize.
The $2,000,000 Fortune game, which went on sale Feb. 27, features a top prize of $2 million, the largest instant-ticket prize the Maryland Lottery has ever offered.
“We were hoping for the $2 million prize,” said the husband. At his wife’s request, the helpful husband stopped at Carroll Fuel located at 900 Taylor Avenue in Towson and bought several $30 scratch-offs.
The lucky wife was peacefully sleeping at 3:30 a.m. when their restless puppy started howling. The husband got up and stayed up.
“I had the tickets in my work briefcase,” he said, so he got them out and started scratching them off. He saw the $50,000 prize and rushed to his wife’s bedside to wake her up with the good news. They also won several hundred dollars on the others, he said.
The parents of one plan to put half of the prize in their savings account, pay off debt and look for a summer beach cottage to rent that allows dogs.
The $2,000,000 Fortune game has five unclaimed $2 million prizes, and a total of more than $90 million in cash prizes. In addition to the $2 million top prizes, the game has 15 more $50,000 prizes and thousands of others ranging from $30 to $5,000.
