Hyattsville Man’s “Got to Play to Win” Philosophy Pays Off

Wins $50,000 Bonus Match 5 Top-Prize

Clearly delighted with his $50,000 Bonus Match 5 prize, the 42-year-old Hyattsville man exclaimed, “I say to myself, ‘you don’t play, you can’t win.’” Well, he played and he won his largest Lottery prize since taking home $2,500 playing Pick 4 last year.

The father-of-two, who is a native of Haiti, enjoys all Maryland Lottery games and said confidently that he was sure that he would eventually win. He purchased $20 worth of Bonus Match 5 tickets for the April 6 drawing and then called the Lottery’s winning numbers line that evening to check his numbers.

“I thought that I’d won $15 at first,” said the winner. He quickly realized his windfall was much larger and stopped only to sign his winning ticket before calling his brother to share the good news. He then woke his sleeping wife with a victory dance. “I was dancing around and saying ‘I won,’” said the happy Lottery fan. “She looked at me and said, “you’re crazy.’”

After showing his skeptical spouse his ticket, the winner placed it in his wallet until arriving at Lottery Headquarters to claim his prize. The man intends to use his winnings to help his family in Haiti build a home and will save for his children’s education. The winning ticket was purchased at 7-11, located at 9151 Riggs Rd. in Adelphi.
