Deep Creek Lake guests find $50,000 prize on Fantasy 5s scratch-off
While vacationing at Deep Creek Lake, John and Susan Breedlove of Ohio decided to buy ice from BFS Foods on Garrett Highway in McHenry to take back to the cabin they shared with 15 other family members.
That icy purchase led to a $50,000 top-prize win on the Maryland Lottery’s Fantasy 5s game.
As his wife Susan paid for the ice purchase, John decided to grab a few scratch-offs from the Lottery’s vending machine. The lucky man selected several Fantasy 5s scratch-offs and the Columbus Ohio couple returned to the cabin. John decided to play his $5 scratch-offs as soon as they arrived and, to his shock, one of the instant tickets revealed a $50,000 top prize.
“We really weren’t sure if we were reading the ticket right so we showed it to the rest of the family,” said the 72-year-old. “We then took the winning ticket back to the store to scan it and it told us to come straight to Lottery headquarters. That’s when we decided to call to make sure that we were winners and Lottery headquarters confirmed that we were. This is such an amazing feeling to win this amount of money!”
Susan said the Lottery win helps make this a Father’s Day weekend to remember. “He’s such an amazing dad and grandfather,” she said. “He deserves it. After we realized we were winners, John strolled around the lake house singing ‘Happy Father’s Day’ to himself.”
The retired couple told Lottery officials that their prize will help them afford many more of the relaxing family vacations.
The Fantasy 5s game debuted in February and has two $50,000 top prizes and six $5,000 prizes waiting to be discovered at Lottery retailers. The game also has more than 300,000 unclaimed prizes ranging from $5 to $1,000.
