Hagerstown man claims $50,000 top prize in May 22 drawing.
“Do you feel lucky?” Maryland Lottery fan “Joey J” can now answer the question he poses to others with a resounding “Yes!” The Hagerstown jeweler, who hands out Lottery scratch-offs to customers who tell him they feel lucky, just polished off his own $50,002 gem of a top-prize win on the Bonus Match 5 game. He’s the lucky one, now!
The 73-year-old plays a variety of Lottery games, from Keno and Bonus Match 5 to Multi-Match and scratch-offs. Although he has come close to big wins in the past, “Joey J” reports his largest prize prior to this one was $1,750.
The Washington County resident found Lottery luck at Central City Liquors in Hagerstown. He doesn’t play the Lottery that often, he said, but on May 22 he decided to buy a Bonus Match 5 ticket. “Joey J” purchased a $6 ticket and let the terminal pick seven of the nine lines of numbers. The drawing came and went and he finally checked the winning numbers in the newspaper. His response was a shocked, “Really?” he recalled. His quick-pick numbers brought home the $50,000 win with a $2 prize added on from another line of numbers on his ticket.
“Joey J” plans to put his big prize in the bank. He has worked as a jeweler for 42 years at numerous stores around the region and has no plans to stop any time soon. He currently reports for duty at Reed Jewelers in Hagerstown and his manager was so thrilled with his top-prize win she volunteered to drive him to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim his prize!
Also celebrating his win is the lucky Lottery retailer. Central City Liquors, located at 401 West Washington Street in Hagerstown, earns a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize ticket in the game.
