10-spot bet leads to $12,000 win
A Frederick man whose home suffered significant damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012 can finally knock storm-related repairs off his to-do list. His $12,000 winning Keno ticket will cover the bills.
“I lost power for only three days, but the power spike did serious damage,” said the 51-year-old. “Just about everything in my house that runs on electricity got zapped. In addition, every outlet and every light fixture was wrecked. It was a mess.”
He’s been replacing and repairing the damage little by little but the enormous project seemed endless. That all changed last weekend, when the machinist arrived at Mountaindale Convenience Store in Thurmont to play his favorite Lottery game.
He picked his numbers on all but one Keno ticket. “I always have the machine pick my numbers on one 10-spot ticket, whenever I play,” he said. Wouldn’t you know it, his quick-pick ticket of random numbers paid off. “I didn’t win with the numbers I’d picked, but when the clerk and I checked the random ticket, there were a bunch of matches.” His nine matches were good for a $4,000 prize. Our winner’s excitement tripled when he remembered adding the Bonus option to his ticket. The multiplier in the game was 3x the prize. “When $4,000 became $12,000 it was a huge rush,” he said. “This has all been a thrill.”
His lucky retailer is also a winner. For selling a winning Keno ticket of more than $10,000, the Frederick County store located at 6726 Mountaindale Road in Thurmont will receive a $120 bonus – equal to 1 percent of the prize.
