Keno Surprise Brings Grateful Tears

Baltimore man wins $30,000 with special numbers

A Baltimore man who knew he won a Maryland Lottery Keno prize was astonished – and grateful – to learn at Lottery headquarters that his prize was much bigger than expected. Happy tears flowed after Lottery staffers told the lucky player and his fiancé that his win was not $7,500, but $30,000!

The 60-year-old retired furniture upholsterer found his prize last weekend playing Keno with his fiancé at Eutaw Market in Baltimore. The couple plays “special numbers” that they say are mostly significant ages. As part of their routine, they play a few games and check the tickets as they go. The surprise win showed up when they scanned one of the tickets and saw a message directing them to claim the prize at Lottery headquarters.

The winner was ready to leave, but his fiancé wanted to play a few more games! When she finished, they hid the lucky ticket in their car and wondered how much they won and what they should do with the money.

“I’m pretty good at math and thought I figured it out,” said the winner’s 47-year-old fiancé. The winner had placed an 8-spot bet on 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 69, 70 and 80 and added the Bonus multiplier. The Bonus for that game tripled the prize!

The couple came up with an amount of $7,500 and happily waited until Tuesday to claim the big win. When they presented the “$7,500” ticket at the Lottery Customer Resource Center, the news left them in tears.

“She called us back and said, ‘Look, you didn’t win $7,500, you won this amount,” said the winner. “All we saw was all those zeros.”

The couple will use the winnings to finish paying for their upcoming wedding. They also plan to move and help family members. Between the two of them, they have six children and two grandchildren.

Joining in on this win is their lucky retailer. Eutaw Market located at 1701 Eutaw Place will earn a $300 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Keno ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.
