Late Bus on Christmas Day Leads to Loads of Lottery Dough

Montgomery County woman claims $50,000 scratch-off prize

231-The-Wizard-of-Oz-ITVMA Christmas day wait for tardy transportation put a Rockville woman on the road to one of the best holiday gifts of her life – $50,000 from a top-prize winning Wizard of Oz scratch-off!

All the 61-year-old woman wanted to do that day was take the bus home and enjoy the holiday with her family. Instead, her bus was running behind schedule! The grandmother of three picked up some groceries and decided to pass the time by playing a Lottery scratch-off. She stepped into Rodman’s Discount Store in Silver Spring to find one and saw the $5 Wizard of Oz game, which she had not tried before.

“I scratched it there in the store and saw the $50,000 almost right away,” she said. “I couldn’t believe my eyes! I kept pretty quiet but hurried home to celebrate with my family.”

The winner, her four adult children and grandchildren enjoyed a memorable holiday. “What an amazing gift this is,” she said. “I always hoped I’d win lots of money but really never imagined that it would happen.”

The homemaker plans to pay bills with her prize and put the rest of her winnings in the bank. “You never know what life has in store for you,” she said. “This really gives me peace of mind.”

The lucky retailer located at 4301 Randolph Road in Silver Spring will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize ticket in the game. The Wizard of Oz scratch-off, which launched in September, still has three $50,000 top prizes available along with seven $5,000 prizes.
