California mom has Maryland son to thank for $50,000 surprise
Thinking about his mom on Mother’s Day, a Washington County man purchased a scratch-off from a local liquor store and put it in the mail to her. Happily, the nearly 3,000 miles the scratch-off had to travel to reach the 73-year-old in California did not affect its Lottery luck! The Price Is Right® instant ticket she scratched carried a surprising second-tier $50,000 prize.
“My mom always gets a ticket or two when she’s here to visit,” said the Hagerstown son, who accompanied his mom to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the prize. “When I saw the sign at the liquor store, I went in and bought her one. When she called me after it had arrived, I couldn’t believe my ears.”
That disbelief occurred for both mother and son. “I really was stunned,” said his mom, a Long Beach resident. “I’ve won $20 plenty of times, but I never imagined something like this. I even sent my son pictures of the ticket so he could make sure it was real.”
Five months passed before Mom could visit Maryland and none of the surprise and happiness has worn off. “It’s still very exciting for me, for us,” she said. Our California winner plans to share her winnings with family members on both sides of the country.
The Price Is Right, a $10 instant ticket, launched on April 22, 2019. There are still seven $100,000 top prizes and 10 $50,000 prizes awaiting discovery at Lottery retailers across the state.
The son bought the winning scratch-off at lucky D&G Liquors located at 18027 Garland Groh Boulevard in Hagerstown. The Washington County retailer has seen three other wins of $1,000 to $5,000 this year on Racetrax and two scratch-offs.
