Middle River couple finds prize on $10,000 Gold Rush game
A Middle River couple who adds an element of Maryland Lottery fun to every stay-at-home date night scratched their way to a top-prize win on the $10,000 Gold Rush game.
The high school sweethearts, who are both retired from jobs in manufacturing and the medical insurance field, save money on date nights by staying in for their special dinner. They also share the excitement of playing 10 scratch-offs he brings home. The 71-year-old husband selects a variety of instant tickets and they sit together, each scratching off five games.
On the day that Lottery luck came to call, the husband visited Compass Express, located at 3 Compass Road in Middle River, and bought the 10 scratch-offs. They sat down to enjoy playing their instant tickets and the fun began.
“When he wins, he’ll say ‘Ooh, ooh, ooh,’” the wife said. “When he scratched this one off, he didn’t say anything and then he said, ‘You gotta look at this.’”
She won $2,500 decades ago so the $10,000 top-prize win on the $2 game is their biggest ever. The couple hid the winning ticket in the flour canister in their kitchen until they could claim their prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. They plan to spend their winnings on restoration of a historic vehicle and will enjoy playing more Lottery scratch-offs.
Although they found the last top prize in the $2 game, the Gold Rush family of scratch-off games still has top prizes available on the $10 instant ticket. The $100,000 Gold Rush scratch-off has two $100,000 top prizes remaining, one more unclaimed $20,000 prize and thousands of other prizes ranging from $10 to $1,000.
