Claims $10,000 scratch-off prize after $50,000 Bonus Match 5 win
A retail worker from Havre de Grace is counting his lucky stars after scoring his second big Lottery win in less than a year. The father of three, who won a $50,000 top prize last May playing Bonus Match 5, just claimed a $10,000 prize on the $100,000 Gold Rush scratch-off.
The lucky 44-year-old was on his way back from a trip to New Jersey with his wife and children when he stopped at Perryville Liquors, located at 1486 Perryville Road, and purchased the $10 ticket. He got back in the car and gave the ticket to his wife to scratch.
“She started saying, ‘We won! We won!’ ” he said. “And, the kids said, ‘No, you’re bluffing.’ ”
The ticket didn’t match any of the winning numbers but it did reveal a “20X” symbol along with a value of $500. The couple thought the scratch-off might be good for a $10,000 prize. The next day, the Harford County man scanned the ticket at another retailer and confirmed his wife’s assessment.
The lucky winner and his wife will celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary next month. He said he plans to use the prize money the same way he did last year when he won the top prize in Bonus Match 5.
“We’ll put it in the bank to use for the kids’ education,” he said. “Our daughter is in 11th grade, so she’s going to be looking at colleges.”
The $100,000 Gold Rush ticket went on sale statewide in January. Four of its $100,000 top prizes are still waiting to be claimed along with seven $20,000 prizes and 17 more $10,000 prizes. This family of games also offers $1, $2 and $5 Gold Rush tickets with top prizes of $1,000, $10,000 and $50,000.
