Spur-of-the-moment scratch-off purchase results in $100,000 prize
A 68-year-old retired insurance executive visited Maryland Lottery headquarters the day before Thanksgiving to claim a $100,000 scratch-off prize that he won when a simple stop at a gas station turned into one of the most memorable moments of his life.
“I’ve been blessed for a long time, well before I bought this ticket, but this is just remarkable,” the lucky winner said.
It was a full gas tank that the Harford County resident wanted when he pulled in to the Perry Hall BP station at 8809 Belair Road in Baltimore. Once he was there, however, something else jumped onto his list, and he purchased a $10 Monopoly scratch-off ticket.
“I get lottery tickets from time to time,” he said. “The idea just pops in my head sometimes when I’m in a store.”
He’s never had any significant luck playing lottery games, but said he has won often enough to make buying tickets a fun proposition. But it’s not just the winning that keeps him playing.
“I know the money I spend is going to a good cause … that it goes back to the people of Maryland,” he said.
When he got home and scratched his ticket, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
“I’m an optimistic guy, but I absolutely never expected to win money like this,” he said.
As happy as he was, it seems his wife was even more thrilled.
“I’m not convinced she believed me, maybe not even now, but she was pretty excited,” he said.
A few home repair projects are on the Harford County man’s agenda, with more ideas sure to be added soon. The Monopoly game has two more $100,000 winning tickets still waiting to be found at Maryland Lottery retailers across the state, as well as four $10,000 prizes. For selling the winning ticket, Perry Hall BP will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
