Lottery Win Helps End Mama’s Leaky Roof Blues

Baltimore woman claims $10,000 top prize on 10x Cash scratch-off

196-10x-Cash-ITVM_P1-blueA Baltimore law firm employee who appealed “to the man upstairs” for a way to afford a new roof just got her answer, thanks to the Maryland Lottery. The lucky city resident won the $10,000 top prize on the popular 10x Cash scratch-off!

“I almost passed out,” said the happy winner. “The man upstairs made a way for me.”

The busy working mom had made multiple roof repairs to seal leaks that left her bedroom ceilings dripping after storms. She got bad news after the last repair job: she needs a new roof. How could she afford that costly project?

“I prayed for help,” said the avid Lottery scratch-off player. She favors the 10x Cash scratch-off, which has delivered small wins in the past, and kept playing the instant ticket in hopes of landing a big prize. On her way to work one morning about two weeks ago, she stopped in at the Toto Mini Mart at 3949 Erdman Avenue in Baltimore to pick up another 10x Cash scratch-off.

Customers were milling around in the store when she started scratching off the $10 instant ticket and revealed its first $1,000 prize. “Keep scratching,” they told her, gathering closer to watch. She did, revealing a $1,000 prize in each of the 10 rows on the scratch-off. When the 57-year-old reported feeling faint after realizing she’d won $10,000, her happy audience suggested she sit down.

“I said, ‘I can’t sit down. I have to go to work,’ ” she remembers telling the group. “I got off the elevator at work and I just stood there for a moment. People asked what was wrong and I said, ‘Nothing’s wrong, something’s right!’ ”

On the advice of her co-workers at the law firm, she signed the back of the ticket and put it in the firm’s safe until she could claim her prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The happy winner has lined up roofing contractors to give her estimates and plans to complete the work as soon as possible.

Want to try your luck with the 10x Cash scratch-off? The game, which launched in March, still has 54 $10,000 top-prize tickets awaiting discovery at Maryland retailers and 31 $1,000 winning tickets.
