Winning Gimme 5 Scratch-off Brightens Their Day
A proud Western Maryland mother arrived at Lottery Headquarters this afternoon with a winning $50,000 Gimme 5 scratch-off in hand and a heartwarming story about how her son was responsible for the win. Her son, who accompanied his mom on the trip from Hagerstown, shyly acknowledged her story but refused any kudos: “I would do anything to make my parents happy,” he said.
The winner’s husband had been a regular Lottery player for years until he was recently diagnosed with cancer. The cancer was detected early enough to be treatable, but the treatment and ensuing illness changed his routine and prevented him from leaving the house to purchase his tickets. In an effort to brighten his parents’ day a few weeks ago, their son went to a local Lottery retailer and purchased a series of Gimme 5 scratch-offs. A few minutes after handing the tickets to his dad, he heard a quiet voice say “I think I won $50,000. No, really, I won $50,000!” The family laughed and didn’t believe it…until they saw the proof on the ticket.
The happy parents of six and grandparents of 18 are planning to spend the bulk of their winnings on medical bills, but will put some aside for family events. They realize now more than ever how important it is to spending time with family and plan to take advantage of every minute they can. The winning ticket was purchased at Hub City Liquor, located at 1061 Maryland Ave. in Hagerstown.
