Kensington gas station sells $20,000 scratch-off winner

A Montgomery County kitchen worker whipped up a batch of excitement this week when he combined a handful of fateful ingredients into a $20,000 win. The recipe? A hunch and a few $250,000 Rich scratch-offs, scratch with care and voila – a nice bit of dough!

The winner, Jose Mamaya, 45, of Silver Spring, said he had a hunch there might be a winning ticket waiting for him when he stopped at a gas station on the way home from work. He bought four of the $10 scratch-offs and began to scratch them in the store. First, he revealed his five winning numbers at the top of his ticket. When he matched one of those numbers, he was significantly stirred and quickly continued scratching to reveal the prize beneath – $20,000!

Mamaya said he has no immediate plans to celebrate, but will put his prize money into savings.

The Maryland Lottery retailer where Mamaya found his magic moment is the Kensington Liberty located at 10550 Connecticut Avenue in Kensington. The $250,000 Rich ticket launched in February, and all five of its $250,000 top prizes remain unclaimed, along with five more $20,000 prizes, 18 $10,000 prizes, and thousands of additional prizes ranging from $10 to $1,000.
