Harford County man claims $50,000 Deluxe Cash Crossword prize
A Harford County man who recently resumed playing Lottery games after an extended hiatus didn’t have to wait long before finding good luck.
The 61-year-old said he played regularly years ago, but stopped playing until about a month ago, when he started buying scratch-offs and tickets for some of the daily drawings. He got back into the game in a big way and made up for lost time by winning the final $50,000 top prize on Deluxe Cash Crossword.
The lucky winner said he enjoys the $5 Deluxe Cash Crossword ticket and was searching for it at a local Wawa store. When he realized the store didn’t have any Deluxe Cash Crossword tickets in stock, he visited the nearby Beverage Barn Liquors located at 3000 Emmorton Road in Abingdon, purchased four tickets and took them home to scratch them.
“I didn’t believe it,” he recalled of the moment when he revealed his prize. “I had my son come and look over it.”
After both of them examined the winning ticket more than 10 times, the lucky winner had his other son take a look at it. After three pairs of eyes, they still weren’t completely convinced that it was a winner. They took the ticket back to the store to scan it, but because it was a big winner, the retailer told them they would have to go to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim their prize.
The retired security guard has shared the great news with his two sons and a few friends, but said he hasn’t made any plans for his prize money. He has friends in North Carolina and Florida and he may take a trip to visit them.
Beverage Barn Liquors is a winner as well. For selling the winning ticket, the retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery. While all nine of the top prizes on Deluxe Cash Crossword have been claimed, the ticket still has four $10,000 prizes waiting to be found at Lottery retailers across the state.
