Marriottsville Retiree Wins Second Big Scratch-off Prize in Two Years

Finds $50,000 winning Power 5s game

An 80-year-old Howard County resident was excited a couple years ago when she won a $10,000 Maryland Lottery prize but nothing compares to the happiness she felt making her second trip to Lottery headquarters. On Monday, she claimed a $50,000 top prize on the Power 5s scratch-off.

The retiree had purchased some instant tickets at her regular spot, Friendship Liquors in West Friendship, and scratched them while still at the store. Her match skills were tested when she revealed 14 winning spots on her $5 Power 5s instant ticket, with prizes ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

“When I realized how much I won, I couldn’t keep in the excitement,” she told Lottery officials. “I took the ticket to my safe deposit box and went home to hide the key.”

The winner knew what to expect when claiming the prize because of her experience with the $10,000 10x Cash winning scratch-off in May 2015. Both times, her good friend joined her for the trip to Baltimore to claim her prize.

“My car knows exactly how to get here,” the winner’s friend said with a chuckle.

The lucky winner looks forward to using some of her prize money to replace her 15-year-old car.

Friendship Liquors wins, too! The store, located at 12800 Frederick Road in Howard County, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize winning scratch-off in the game. That lucky Lottery retailer also sold a $50,000 winning Bonus Match 5 ticket in the March 30 drawing. Lottery officials are still waiting for that lucky winner to come forward to claim that prize.

There are also lots of winning instant tickets remaining in the Power 5s game, which launched a few weeks ago. Players can look for seven unclaimed $50,000 top prizes and thousands of others ranging from $5 to $5,000.
