Maryland’s First Powerball Millionaires Claim Prize

PowerballBy claiming a $1 million Powerball prize won late last month, a Columbia couple has become the first local millionaires produced by the popular multi-state game.  The winners made use of the popular game’s Power Play option to turn what would have been a $200,000 second-tier win into $1 million.

“We’re very happy to have our first Powerball millionaire,” confirmed Lottery Communications Director Carole Everett, “We know it’ll be the first of many.”  Powerball went on sale here in January and Lottery records show that while no local player has hit the jackpot, three Marylanders have won the same $200,000 prize originally won by today’s winners and 27 more have won the third-tier $10,000 wins.

Maryland’s first Powerball $1 million second-tier winning ticket was purchased at Royal Farms #805, located at 8755 Center Park Dr. in Columbia. The Royal Farm received a $2,500 commission for selling the winning ticket.

The Powerball drawing is held in Orlando, Florida and can be seen locally on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 11:22 pm on WBAL-TV, Channel 11.  The multi-state game is played in 41 states, Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands.
