Members of “Familia Gàlvez,” a Prince George’s County quartet of family members and friends, celebrate a $100,000 Ravens scratch-off win.
Prize will help Beltsville woman continue medical studies
For “Familia Gàlvez,” the $10 Ravens scratch-off was a lucky pick. The Beltsville Baltimore Ravens fan selected the instant ticket despite the NFL team having its 2020 Super Bowl hopes dashed. She won a $100,000 top prize and, after all, they won the AFC North Division Championship.
“It was a great season,” said the medical assistant. “Familia Gàlvez” is the Maryland Lottery publicity name chosen by a quartet of friends and relatives from Beltsville led by the winner. The name stems from a Spanish language internet-based short-form comedy series.
Despite living in the heart of Washington Redskins territory, the members of “Familia Gàlvez” are dedicated Ravens fans. The winner’s choice of the Ravens scratch-off was also based on a strategy. She asked the cashier at the Langley Shop in Hyattsville which of the tickets on sale at the store had seen recent wins.
“I asked, ‘Has anyone won yet from this one?’” the winner explained. Her fondness for scratch-off games extends to cover most varieties: number-matching games, crossword puzzles and bingo-themed instant tickets. The 22-year-old was home alone when she scratched off her $10 Ravens game and didn’t know what to think when she revealed the big win.
“I was freaking out!” said the Prince George’s County resident. The winner called one of the members of “Familia Gàlvez” to come over and confirm what she was seeing.
“I didn’t think it was real. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t losing my head!” she said. Her friend confirmed the win and the two of them, joined by a pair of cousins, visited Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the windfall. “It’s still surreal,” the winner declared.
With the prize money, she plans to pay off some student loan debt, continue working as a medical assistant and pursue her nursing certificate at Prince George’s Community College. In addition, the members of “Familia Gàlvez” plan to share a celebratory meal.
Also celebrating is the Langley Shop, which is located at 8001 New Hampshire Avenue. The Prince George’s County business earns a bonus of $1,000 from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.
Ravens fans can “heed the caw” and try their luck with this scratch-off, too. There are six more unclaimed $100,000 top prizes and 14 $10,000 prizes, along with hundreds of thousands of others ranging from $10 to $1,000.
