New roof and car loan payoff in his future
A new roof is coming to the home that U.S. Navy veteran Harold Harris Sr. has shared with his wife of more than 50 years, thanks to a lucky $50,000 win in the Feb. 18 Bonus Match 5 game.
The Dundalk man couldn’t believe it when he checked the numbers on his $2 ticket Saturday night. The 76-year-old bought his lucky quick-pick ticket only hours earlier at Cut Rate Liquors near his home.
“I thought I only had a $400 winner,” Harold said, “and I looked again and I had all the numbers!”
The grandfather of three called his daughter, who lives nearby, and asked her to come over and see if he really was the top-prize winner in the daily game. She downloaded the Maryland Lottery app on her smartphone so she could scan her dad’s ticket and checked the numbers. In addition to confirming the win, she also took a screen shot at 9:04 p.m. of the app’s congratulations message.
The father of three adult children, Harold spent nine years in the Navy, including his time in the reserve. Working as a boilerman, he achieved the rank of petty officer third class. The retiree was quick with his decision on what he plans to do with his prize – pay off the loan on his vehicle and get a new roof installed.
Also benefiting from his win is the lucky Lottery retailer. Cut Rate Liquors, located at 4039 North Point Blvd. in Dundalk, will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the top-prize scratch-off in the game.
