An Olney family of six was hopping with joy after the Easter bunny brought them a life-changing Maryland Lottery nest egg for the holiday.

Their $50,000 win on a Monopoly scratch-off means the engaged couple can move forward with their dream of buying a home, scheduling a wedding and building up their savings.

The unexpected win came as the couple were merrily scratching off a half dozen assorted Lottery scratch-offs on Easter morning as their children enjoyed the holiday. The 31-year-old mom, who bought the tickets the day before Easter at Olney Shell in Olney, realized she need scratch no further than the first line on her $5 scratch-off after it revealed a $50,000 win!

“I thought it was fake, at first,” said the Montgomery County woman. She showed the ticket to her fiancé of three years and to her children, who all confirmed the win. “Then we were shouting, ‘What a good Easter!’ ” she said.

The couple hid the winning ticket in a dresser drawer beneath clothes until the wife, who works in the health insurance field, could arrange her work schedule to claim the prize. Her fiancé, 33, is a small business owner in the heating, air conditioning and ventilation field. Only the six family members know about their win and they plan to keep it that way, said the mom. Her children range in age from 5 to 13 and are looking forward to a bigger house.

The couple has known each other for eight years and play scratch-offs together as a hobby. They also play Powerball, Mega Millions and 5 Card Cash. They picked the Monopoly ticket because of its second-chance drawings for prizes of $50,000; two more drawings will take place May 20 and June 17. Both are members of the My Lottery Rewards player loyalty club and enter their non-winning tickets into drawings. Two years ago, the dad was the lucky winner of an Orioles scratch-off second-chance contest to be named Contestant of the Game. He’s still trying to win that Orioles second-chance prize this year.

Their lucky Montgomery County Lottery retailer has sold several winning tickets lately, the woman said, and they plan to keep buying scratch-offs and terminal game tickets there. You’ll find the Olney Shell at 18040 Georgia Ave. in Olney.
