Claims $10,000 prize on Poker Showdown game
Although she knows nothing about playing poker, a Gaithersburg woman figured out enough about the cards she revealed on her Poker Showdown scratch-off to know she won something!
How much cash was coming her way was unclear to the 58-year-old. Yes, said the Montgomery County school bus driver, she is still learning how to play poker.
“My dad played poker, but I never really learned to play,” she said. “I kept looking at the front, then looking at the back, trying to see if I won.”
She had purchased her $10 game at Grove Beer and Wine at 16825 Crabbs Branch Way in Rockville in mid-December and scratched the instant ticket off at home. Confused about how much she’d won, the longtime player put the scratch-off back in her purse and didn’t check the ticket again until 2016 rolled around.
The winner and her fiancé were playing their regular Lottery numbers when she remembered the Poker Showdown scratch-off. “Good thing I did not tear it up,” she said.
When she tried to cash the ticket, she was told her prize was so large she had to take the game to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. She did so with her fiancé and claimed a $10,000 prize.
The grateful winner plans to use her windfall to pay bills and go shopping. She also may share some of her prize with family members. A big Powerball fan, the lucky woman is hoping for a return trip to the Winner’s Lounge this week to claim the $400 million Powerball jackpot up for grabs on Wednesday, Jan. 6!
