When one of the “Tres Amigos” decided to visit her uncle, she also decided to purchase a Powerball ticket using lucky numbers supplied by her cousin. The Upper Marlboro woman’s $2 ticket landed her a $50,000 prize in the Saturday, June 10 drawing.
The teacher made her winning purchase at Discount Tobacco located at 7069 Martin Luther King Highway in Landover. Several days passed before the Prince George’s County resident checked her ticket and that was only at her uncle’s suggestion. A California player had won the jackpot but more than 64,000 Marylanders won prizes of $4 to $50,000. Could she be one of the lucky winners?
“I handed over the ticket to him and he scanned it,” said the youngest of the “Tres Amigos.” Her uncle was puzzled at first because the ticket checker said to report to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the prize.
“I was curious now,” she said, “so I went to another retailer and the ticket checker revealed it was a $50,000 winning ticket. We were all screaming with joy! It took us a day to calm down.”
Her lucky ticket was one of two in Maryland to win a $50,000 prize and one of 73 nationwide to win that amount in the June 10 drawing.
The “Tres Amigos” traveled together to Baltimore to help the 25-year-old claim her prize. What are her plans for spending her winnings? “I will do what my heart pleases and save the rest!” she said.
The trio’s to-do list includes playing Mega Millions together to try their luck. They sure hope “Tres Amigos” can win again! The Mega Millions jackpot for Friday’s drawing is $113 million with a cash option of $70.4 million (before taxes).
