Randallstown woman attributes win to son’s birthday
A recent nursing school graduate was thinking about finalizing details for her son’s upcoming birthday party when she bought a ticket for the $1.6 million world-record Powerball jackpot drawing on Jan. 13. She wasn’t really thinking about winning, said the 25-year-old, who admitted that she jumped on the jackpot-chasing bandwagon after hearing about the remarkable prize.
To her amazement, the lucky woman is now “sitting pretty” with a $50,012 win!
The Randallstown resident was on her way to work when she decided to stop and get a ticket. She spent $10 on a Powerball ticket at the 7-Eleven #25045 located at 403 Frederick Road in Baltimore. Not only was this the day of the much anticipated drawing, it was also her son’s birthday.
“He was my lucky charm,” she said. “But, honestly, I didn’t think I would win anything.”
The geriatric nursing assistant placed the $10 ticket in her pocket and didn’t think to check the numbers until the next morning. “I took the ticket out of my pocket and checked the numbers from the Lottery’s update on Facebook,” she said “I was so nervous because I knew I had won, but I didn’t want to get too happy.”
Because she doesn’t play Lottery games often, she wanted to make sure she really had a winning ticket. She phoned several family members and friends for help. “I had so many questions,” she said, smiling.
After many confirmations of her win and getting instructions on how to get to Lottery headquarters from her dad, the lucky lady made it to the Lottery Winner’s Lounge. She brought her grandmother along because “she knows more about this Lottery thing, than me,” she said.
The winner plans to use some of the prize money to pay off her school debt and to pay down her car loan. She plans to save whatever is left!
Our “Sitting pretty” winner joins a more than 560,000 Maryland winners in the Jan. 13 drawing. They include three $1 million winners, one $100,000 winner and 24 $50,000 winners.
