Occasional Powerball Players Win $50,000 Prize

Delaware couple cashes in on lucky quick-pick ticket

A happy husband and wife from Bear, Delaware hit the road last week for a trip to Baltimore, where they visited Maryland Lottery headquarters and claimed a $50,000 Powerball prize.

The two only buy tickets “every once in a while” if they happen to be at the store and have extra cash on hand. This was the case on Jan. 11 when they stopped at Jayco Liquors at 1101 East Pulaski Highway in Elkton, Md. to buy beverages before meeting friends.

The lucky pair completely forgot about their $10 quick-pick Powerball ticket for the Jan. 12 drawing until almost a week later. The wife was waiting for her husband to get dressed for dinner. “I decided to get out my phone and check while he was still in the room getting dressed,” she said. When the lucky lady realized they had matched almost all of the winning numbers, her first words to her husband were, “One more number and I would have retired!”

They plan to use their newfound riches to erase the little credit card debt they have and to help with travel plans they had already made. “We were already going on a trip this summer, so this just makes things a little more extravagant,” she said.

No one hit the Powerball jackpot in Saturday’s drawing, so it rolled to $144 million for the Wednesday, Jan. 23 drawing. The cash option is $86.6 million.
