A third-tier Mega Millions hit for $10,000 will make for a nicer than usual holiday season for 15 players involved in an office pool at a computer software firm in Lanham.
“It’ll be nice for Christmas,” a pool member said upon picking up winnings for the group. The players have bought Mega Millions and Powerball tickets as a team for at least 15 years when the jackpots reach $300 million or more. The Lanham pool hit in the Oct. 16 drawing when the jackpot reached $667 million. There were no jackpot winners in that drawing – it would eventually rise to $1.537 billion before being hit on Oct. 23.
The Lanham players hail from all over the region. The office pool included two players each from Columbia and Davidsonville, as well as one each from Annapolis, Bowie, Elkridge, Laurel, Rockville, Severna Park, Waldorf, Albany, N.Y.; Princeton, N.J.; Salisbury, N.C., and Vienna, Va.
There were 4.5 million winning tickets in the Oct. 16 drawing, which paid prizes ranging from $2 to $1 million. At the third-tier prize level, there were 100 winners nationwide including the Lanham group. A $10,000 prize split 15 ways is not a vast sum, but an office celebration is likely in the works!
The team bought the winning quick-pick ticket at Rita’s Gourmet Deli located at 4315 Forbes Boulevard in Lanham.
