Out-of-Town Visit Leads to Big Lottery Payday

A relative’s encouragement to play Racetrax put Maurice Cain of Pennsylvania in the Maryland Lottery Winner’s Circle.

Philadelphia resident claims $61,689.80 prize on Racetrax Superfecta Box bet

Maurice Cain recently made a fortunate trip from Philadelphia to Baltimore to visit family members. While in town, his cousin convinced him to play Racetrax, which is his cousin’s favorite game. Soon afterward, lucky Maurice was racing to Maryland Lottery headquarters to claim a $61,689.80 prize.

The 54-year-old found his Lottery luck at Lake Forest Exxon located at 448 North Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg. Having never played before, he randomly selected his horses. Maurice placed a 20-draw Superfecta Box wager on horses number 9, 10, 11 and 12, hoping they would cross the finish line in the correct order.

The lucky player checked the Lottery website the next day and learned that he won. The first thing the Pennsylvania resident did was call his cousin. “I couldn’t believe it,” Maurice said. “I thank God, I’m just going to stay still and grow old gracefully.”

Maurice, who has worked in the mental health field for nine years, has won smaller amounts playing Lottery games but nothing close to this windfall. When asked of his plans for his prize, Maurice said he will pay off bills and keep news of his big win quiet!

Lake Forest Exxon in Gaithersburg also benefits from his Lottery luck. The store earns a $616.89 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.
