Waldorf man claims top prize on Bingo Times 10
Jeffrey Mayer of Waldorf unwrapped a sleep-zapping surprise after working the predawn shift at the UPS Distribution Center in Southern Maryland. Because he failed to follow his early morning routine, he wound up at Maryland Lottery headquarters holding a giant check for $50,000 made out in his name!
He followed half of his routine that morning by stopping for breakfast at the local Chick-fil-A and then at Holiday Liquors, where he buys Maryland Lottery scratch-offs before going home to go to sleep. On this day, however, he bought and scratched off a Bingo Times 10 instant ticket in the store and was instantly both wide awake and a winner.
“When I saw I had won, it was weird because I was calm but I think I was in shock because I can’t sleep now,” he said with a chuckle. “It’s been a surreal morning and when I say I’m in shock, it’s in a good way.”
The 36-year-old, who loads and sorts items shipped across the country, told Lottery officials that he and his mom love to play extended play scratch-offs like the $5 Bingo Times 10. Extended play tickets take longer to play and are fun, he said. “I think the most I’ve won playing any ticket, up to now, was $500.”
How will he spend his windfall? He’s following suggestions made by his older brother Donald, who accompanied Jeffrey to Lottery headquarters. He plans to take a cruise out of Miami, invest some money and pay bills. The brothers planned to celebrate the win by taking in an Orioles game at Camden Yards.
Also a winner is the retailer that sold the winning scratch-off. Holiday Liquors at 3385 Leonardtown Road in Waldorf will get a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
