Whether it’s a lifelong lucky streak or just good karma, the winning ways of “Poetry Princess” of Nottingham continue. She just added a $100,000 jewel of a Maryland Lottery prize to her winner’s crown.
“The Lottery’s been good to me,” she said.
The latest of the Baltimore County resident’s string of Lottery wins is also her largest – the top prize on a $10 Your Fortune instant ticket. She had stopped at J Convenience in Parkville to buy four instant tickets, as she does occasionally, and scratched the lucky game off in the store. Realizing she had a top-prize winner, “Poetry Princess” stayed quiet.
“I tucked the ticket in my pocket and went outside and called my husband,” she said. “It’s amazing.”
The healthcare worker, who is retiring in July after more than four decades in the field, attributes her luck to good karma. She’s won $30,000 on one scratch-off, $10,000 twice on other scratch-offs as well as hundreds of dollars on Pick 3 and Keno. The 66-year-old also wins football pools, raffles and generally ends up in the green when it comes to games of chance.
The same week this big win came her way, “Poetry Princess” also won $290 on Pick 3, cashed that ticket and bought one Keno ticket that turned into two tickets when the clerk made a mistake. Those two winning tickets gave “Poetry Princess” several hundred dollars to take home.
Her big prizes have gone to help others. “Poetry Princess,” who is a published poet, and her husband plan to use this prize to pay off a home equity loan and will bank the rest to enjoy in the future. In honor of her big win, she wrote a poem and got to read it in person to Maryland Lottery Director Gordon Medenica in the Winner’s Circle at Lottery headquarters. Surrounded by family members and Lottery employees, she read (in part):
Thanks to the Lottery for my big win,
I know that I will be playing once again.
If you think this could not happen to you,
It is really, so untrue.
Stop and get yourself some tickets today,
Have a good time as you play.
May you find that needle in the hay stack,
Good luck to all on getting a BIG payback.”
The Your Fortune game has three unclaimed $100,000 top prizes and five $10,000 prizes, in addition to thousands of other prizes ranging from $10 to $1,000.
The lucky retailer, J Convenience, wins big, too. For selling a top-prize Your Fortune scratch-off, the store located at 8765 Satyr Hill Road in Parkville will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.
