Powerball Jackpot Chasers Stumble into $30,000 Prize

Happy Eastern Shore residents added Power Play to their ticket

A jackpot-chasing couple from Caroline County who fell one number shy of achieving a major Powerball win are still happy Maryland Lottery winners! The surprised pair matched four numbers in the Sept. 13 drawing plus the Powerball and had Power Play on their lucky ticket. Adding Power Play tripled their prize to $30,000!

“Oh, we were so close,” said the 58-year-old wife. “The number that came out was a 37, we had a 31.” Her 69-year-old husband proclaimed, “We will be back with a jackpot win!”

Their lucky Powerball ticket bought on at a Dash In on the Eastern Shore is one of two in Maryland that matched four numbers plus the Powerball and had the 3x Power Play multiplier. No one won the jackpot, which rolled to $171 million with a cash option of $102 million for the Wednesday, Sept. 17 drawing. Maryland saw 13,530 Powerball winners in the drawing with prizes ranging from $4 to $30,000.

The lucky Henderson residents say they only play jackpot games and they play them every week. On Saturday, the husband spent $15 on the Quick Pick ticket at Dash In #14331 located at 401 Thompson’s Creek Road in Stevensville.

The couple could not believe their good fortune when they won. After double-checking the ticket, they signed the back of it and put it away until they could claim their prize at Lottery headquarters. The self-employed Lottery players, who plan to retire soon, said they will save their prize and add the winnings to their nest egg.
