Greenbelt man wins $50,000 Powerball prize in Jan. 12 drawing.
Seeing his first Maryland snowfall of the year inspired a former Canadian into action and led to his first amazing moment of 2019 – a $50,000 Powerball win!
The 35-year-old Greenbelt resident enjoyed a series of amazing moments in 2018. He relocated from Toronto to Prince George’s County, became a newlywed and a father. He and his wife developed an interest in the game during the meteoric rise of both the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots last fall but only play occasionally. They let the terminal quick pick their numbers in hopes of a win.
Inspired by the snow last weekend, the newlywed purchased his lucky Powerball ticket in Greenbelt for the Saturday, Jan. 12 drawing. He didn’t realize he had a $50,000 winner until he fished the $10 ticket out of his jacket this week and scanned it using the Lottery’s smartphone app. Immediately after seeing his prize appear on the screen, the happy winner packed up his wife and baby for a trip to Lottery headquarters to claim the winnings!
“This is a blessing for our family,” he said, adding that the new funds will provide a foundation for the growing family.
He bought the lucky ticket at Greenbelt Liquors located at 6000 Greenbelt Road in the Prince George’s County city of Greenbelt. A second $50,000 prize-winning ticket was sold in Maryland in the Jan. 12 drawing at Jayco Liquors at 1101 East Pulaski Highway in Elkton. No one has come forward yet to claim that prize. No one hit the jackpot, either, and it has rolled to $129 million for the Saturday, Jan. 19 drawing.
