Claims $50,000 prize from June 8 drawing
A Bowie man who plays Lottery games once or twice a week was sitting on a $50,000 fortune for a month and didn’t even know it! The lucky 66-year-old was cleaning off his coffee table when he stumbled across a Powerball ticket.
The retired electrician recalled buying the quick-pick ticket for the June 8 drawing while he was at Rips Restaurant, which is located at 3809 N. Crain Highway in Bowie. The Prince George’s County resident quickly pulled up the Maryland Lottery website on his phone and checked his newly found ticket against the winning numbers. To his surprise, he scored a $50,000 third-tier prize.
“I thought something was wrong,” the lucky winner said. He called his wife of 20 years and shared the news with her. His dubious spouse thought he was playing games and, in fact, said she still won’t believe the big win is theirs until they receive the check in the mail.
The happy winner, who is one of 36 Maryland Powerball players to win third-tier prizes this year, plans to use his windfall to pay off bills. No one has hit the Powerball jackpot for weeks so players can dream of winning $194 million in the Saturday, July 13 drawing. The cash option is $128.1 million.
