Lucky lady wins $50,000 prize in Jan. 9 Powerball drawing
Wonderful life-changing moments just keep coming for an Annapolis title processor, who can add winning a $50,000 Powerball prize on Jan. 9 to her growing list of happy memories. The lucky lady is celebrating getting engaged on her birthday last month and now can say she is one of 406,168 Maryland winners of $4 to $1 million in the Jan. 9 drawing.
December and January have been exciting for the hard-working mother of two, who is also now shopping for a home to purchase. The 35-year-old and her fiancé watched the Powerball jackpot soar to $900 million for the Jan. 9 jackpot before joining the crowd of jackpot chasers. She rarely plays Powerball, she said, but picked up a few tickets from Marshy Creek Liquors on 3634 Main Street in Grasonville before starting a weekend of house hunting.
The Saturday drawing produced one $1 million Maryland winner. When she saw a Facebook post about the $1 million winning ticket, the Anne Arundel County resident remembered her tickets! She checked her numbers with the weekend results and saw several matches on one ticket. She didn’t know how much she had won until she took the $2 quick-pick ticket to a Lottery retailer. After scanning the ticket, the retailer pushed a Powerball payout chart toward the winner, highlighting the corresponding payout of $50,000.
“I couldn’t believe what was happening,” she said. “I started shaking all over and ran out of the store.” The shock of that moment has just begun to wear off, she told Lottery officials after claiming her prize on Jan. 19.
The happy mom has shared the great news with just a few friends and family members. What will she do with her prize? She will probably take a vacation with her children – something the busy mom hasn’t done in nearly six years. She’s also looking forward to using the funds toward the family’s home purchase.
