Sleepless night follows Baltimore medical professional’s big win
Her sister taught her well. A Baltimore Racetrax player who switched to Trifecta Wheel bets after her sister explained the basics of the wager is thanking her lucky stars — and horses — for her $15,616.50 win.
The medical professional found her Lottery luck at Cherry Hill Liquors in Baltimore, which is her favorite Lottery retailer. “Every now and then I’ll play Racetrax,” she said. Studying the numbers before placing a Trifecta Wheel bet is part of her routine. She realized that 12, 11 and 10 had not popped up recently as winning numbers so she chose them for her 20-draw wager. Later that night, the winner nicknamed “Lucky Wheel” settled down in bed to check her ticket for a win.
“I was watching the games on my phone,” said the mother of two. “I only had two games left to go.” She didn’t wait long — the 18th race delivered her biggest Racetrax prize ever. “I called my son and said, ‘I think I hit for $15,000.’”
“I said, ‘Mom, are you serious?’ ” recalled her adult son, who accompanied her to Lottery headquarters to claim the prize. The phone call took place around 10 p.m. and the two remained sleepless most of the night. They kept texting “back and forth” about her lucky bet and what to do with the prize.
“I have it all mapped out,” said the 53-year-old. Ms. “Lucky Wheel” plans to pay off most of her car loan, pay off her credit cards, buy herself a bedroom set and help her daughter with prom expenses.
Also happy about her win is her lucky retailer. Cherry Hill Liquors at 632 Cherry Hill Road in Baltimore earns a bonus of $156.16 for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.
