What could turn a Washington Redskins fan into a Baltimore Ravens fan? A $20,000 win on a Ravens scratch-off, that’s what! Daniel Wilson from Boonsboro is the lucky holder of that potentially team-changing instant ticket.
The 59-year-old occasional scratch-off player picked up the lucky instant ticket on Friday while shopping at Weis Markets #178 located at 700 Chase Six Boulevard in Boonsboro. The Western Maryland resident was there to buy green beans and found himself picking up an extra item that delivered bushels of green.
“I had a couple of dollars left over and something said go get a ticket,” said Daniel. Confessing that he is a Washington Redskins fan, the lucky player said the only reason he picked the $2 Ravens scratch-off was because “the couple in front of me bought one.”
After his purchase, the winner forgot about the ticket for a few hours. He played the game later that night.
“I noticed that I matched the number 10 and when I saw the prize was $20,000, I thought it was a trick,” Daniel said. The software sales employee then checked the Maryland Lottery app for a second opinion, which also reported a win. Still unsure, the skeptical player went back to the grocery and had a cashier triple check the instant ticket just to make sure.
The married dad of adult children didn’t immediately share the news with anyone – even his wife! When he gave her the great news on Sunday, his excited wife told him to go get the money! “I informed her it was Sunday and we have to wait until Monday,” he said, smiling.
The lucky Washington County man plans to save the winnings and buy more instant tickets down the road. Although the Redskins are his number one team, he’s decided the Ravens come in a close second.
The lucky retailer earns a $200 bonus from the Lottery for selling the top-prize winning scratch-off in the $2 Ravens game.
