Second player in a week to claim top prize in Winter Cash Tripler game
A retired firefighter from Baltimore who has enjoyed playing Maryland Lottery games for years claimed the winnings on a smoking hot ticket Nov. 4 – a $100,000 top prize on the Winter Cash Tripler scratch-off game.
Going by the name “Smokey,” the 89-year-old player prefers scratch-off games, but also plays the daily numbers games Pick 3 and Pick 4.
“I like any of them that you’re going to win on,” he said while making his claim at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. Over the years, “Smokey” has won a few dollars now and again, and was once part of a relatively large prize. This is his biggest solo score ever! He hopes to repeat his good luck by continuing to play Lottery games.
“That’s his pleasure,” explained his wife. “Smokey” went on to say he enjoys playing because he likes the feeling of “hoping you’ll win something.” “Smokey” and his wife plan to pay a few bills with his prize and give some money to their two grown children.
He bought the winning $10 scratch-off at Gruner’s Liquor & Food Market, 101 North Monastery Street in Baltimore. For selling a top-tier winning scratch-off, the store receives a Lottery bonus of $1,000.
Available statewide on Oct. 21, the Winter Cash Tripler scratch-off shot straight to the top spot on the Lottery Top 40 Scratch-Offs chart. On its opening day, the game had eight top prizes at the $100,000 level. “Smokey” was the second winner to claim a top prize, following in the footsteps of “Goofy Golfer” of Rosedale. In addition, 23 second-tier prizes at the $10,000 level remain unclaimed along with thousands of others ranging from $10 to $1,000.
