Retired Law Enforcement Officer Nabs 2020 Cash Game’s Top Prize

Finds $20,200 winning instant ticket in Baltimore

What first looked like a mistake turned into a whole lot of Lottery green for a retired police officer last week. The Dundalk resident chose a lucky $20 scratch-off, revealing the 2020 Cash game’s $20,200 top prize.

The winner is a 30-year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department and an avid golfer. When he’s not enjoying time on the links, the 72-year-old said, he is often playing Maryland Lottery scratch-offs.

Last Friday, he did just that. The retiree purchased the 2020 Cash game at Royal Farms #068 in Baltimore. Before he turned the ignition in his vehicle to leave the store parking lot, the loyal player decided to give his scratch-off a try. The delighted man matched one of the game’s winning numbers! The player dashed back into the store to double-check the result with the store clerk. He told Lottery officials that he had to make sure what he was seeing wasn’t a mistake.

“I was overjoyed, but I still couldn’t believe it. I looked at that ticket for quite a while before it all sunk in,” he said.

The happy winner said his New Year’s resolutions are to pay down debt and lose weight. He told Lottery officials that his lucky windfall will help him tackle the first half of his 2020 resolution.

The Royal Farms store that sold his winning scratch-off can also celebrate. The Baltimore County convenience store located at 7701 German Hill Road in Dundalk earns a $202 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

More than 175 top prizes remain in this popular game, which celebrates the year 2020. There are also 421 unclaimed prizes of $2,020 and 26,254 unclaimed prizes of $220.
