Retired Postal Employee Enjoys Special Delivery of $50,000 Powerball Prize

Ticket bought on a whim for Jan. 6 drawing

A Prince George’s County man who rarely plays Powerball decided to try the multi-state game after talking to a friend. His interest in playing grew as they discussed the world-record jackpot, which just rolled again to $1.4 billion for the Wednesday, Jan. 13 drawing.

Rarely does a casual conversation result in such a spectacular payday! The 63-year-old retired postal employee is the latest Marylander to win a $50,000 Powerball prize. He bought his winning ticket at 7-Eleven #26800 at 12009 Laurel Bowie Road in Laurel on the day of the Jan. 6 drawing.

“I checked my tickets the next day,” said the husband and father. “I scanned them and was a bit confused by the message on the ticket reader.” When he returned home, the Laurel man checked Wednesday’s Powerball results at mdlottery.com and his confusion ended.

“We saw that most of the numbers matched and could not believe it! We kept checking again and again. My wife kept saying, ‘This just can’t be happening.’ ”

The Laurel couple plans to add the prize to their retirement fund. “Life will be a lot easier for us now,” he said.
