Retired Postal Worker Wins $50,000 Powerball Prize

Claims third-tier prize in Jan. 30 drawing

A 72-year-old Baltimore man walked around for five days unaware that a Powerball ticket in his pocket from the Jan. 30 drawing was worth $50,000. When he checked the ticket this week, he quickly asked his son to accompany him to Lottery headquarters to claim the prize.

The retired postal worker and Vietnam veteran purchased his Powerball ticket at E-Z Convenience, located at 8104 Loch Raven Boulevard in Towson, the day before the drawing. He put the $10 quick-pick ticket in his wallet and went about his week. Fast forward to Monday when he checked his ticket at the store. He got a message on the ticket checker directing him to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim his prize.

“So, this really is legitimate?” the winner asked Lottery officials after claiming his ticket, still in disbelief. To win $50,000, a player must match four numbers and the Power Ball. The winner, who is a regular Lottery player, plans to put his big prize in the bank.

The Lottery is urging everyone to check purses, wallets and vehicles for two unclaimed $50,000 winning Powerball tickets that are about to expire. A ticket purchased at Burchmart #1 located at 27350 Three Notch Road in Mechanicsville for the Aug. 11 drawing expires on Saturday, Feb. 9. Another ticket purchased at Giant #141 located at 7940 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie for the Aug. 25 drawing is set to expire on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Because Lottery headquarters is closed on weekends, players must claim these prizes at Lottery headquarters by 4:15 p.m. the Friday before the Saturday expiration dates.
