Retired Steel Worker Calmly Claims Bonus Match 5 Top Prize

Pikesville resident the latest $50,000 winner in nightly Lottery game

For most Lottery winners, coming to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim a big prize is a momentous occasion. But the latest winner of a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 top prize was Mr. Calm, Cool and Collected!

The 77-year-old Pikesville resident buys about $5 worth of Lottery tickets each week. The Bonus Match 5 ticket he purchased at Village Wines & Liquors, located at 7006 Reisterstown Road in Baltimore, was packed with Lottery luck. He had the Lottery terminal quick pick three lines of numbers for the July 8 drawing, and the top line on his ticket – 1, 7, 8, 29 and 32 – matched that night’s winning numbers.

“I don’t know why I’m not that excited about it,” the retired employee of Bethlehem Steel said with a smile. “I found out about it yesterday. I had the ticket sitting on my dresser, and when I took it to the store to scan it, it said ‘Go to Lottery.’ I asked the guy at the store what that meant and he said it means you won a big amount!”

The Baltimore County resident has planned for a long time to use any big Lottery prize he won to pay for renovations to his house. The retiree also has a basement workshop where he repairs and refurbishes furniture and may buy new tools with his winnings. The Bonus Match 5 win isn’t his first brush with Lottery luck. The loyal player recalls a $10,000 Pick 3 prize he won about 25 years ago by playing his birth date.

Village Wines & Liquors is a winner as well. For selling the top-prize ticket, the retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery. Bonus Match 5 drawings take place every night with a top prize of $50,000. There have been 29 top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 tickets sold this year.
