Retired Teacher Chalks Up Lottery Win to Good Luck

Takes home $50,000 top prize in June 10 Bonus Match 5 drawing

A retired teacher was enjoying a relaxing read of his morning newspaper until he thought to check the winning numbers for the Maryland Lottery’s Bonus Match 5 drawing.

The loyal Lottery player had let the terminal at his favorite retailer, Harper’s Choice Liquors in Columbia, quick pick his numbers for the June 10 drawing. He was relying on Lady Luck to win and this time she didn’t let him down! The Columbia man won the game’s $50,000 top prize with a $2 ticket. He had just finished reading the newspaper when he got a call from a close friend who shares his love of Lottery games. The friend reported great news: Their lucky retailer had sold the winning Bonus Match 5 ticket. Well, that was old news to our winner.

“I checked the paper already,” he remembers telling his friend. “I won!”

The 73-year-old plans to pay bills with his prize and is thinking about taking a vacation to enjoy a little fishing, he said. The winner and his pal, a retired asphalt worker, enjoy playing Pick 3, Pick 4 and Bonus Match 5 together at Harper’s Choice Liquors and are already planning their next visit. For selling the winning ticket, the Howard County retailer located at 5485 Harper’s Farm Road will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery.

This is the 21st Bonus Match 5 top prize awarded in 2015. Drawings are held seven nights a week, and tickets are available at more than 4,500 Lottery retailers across the state.
