Retiree Claims Maryland’s First $20,000 MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB™ Prize

Next drawing Friday for $18 million Top Prize, 12 $1 million prizes

The Maryland Lottery on Monday welcomed its first $20,000 MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB™ winner! A Silver Spring retiree came forward to claim the prize he won on the new draw game by following his favorite Lottery retailer’s advice to buy a $5 ticket.

A clerk at Rodman’s Discount Store noticed the lucky player had purchased Monopoly-themed scratch-offs in the past. The employee suggested he try the new MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB game that debuted Oct. 19 and experienced its first drawing Friday, Oct. 24. The Montgomery County resident took a chance and filled out his playslip, hoping for good fortune. He couldn’t believe how close he came to winning the multi-state game’s Top Prize when he checked his ticket over the weekend.

“I missed one number,” he told Lottery officials. “I had four of the five and the Property Number. I was very close.”

Maryland had 4,902 MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB winners of $5 to $20,000 from the Oct. 24 drawing. No one hit the Top Prize, so it rolls to $18 million for the Friday, Oct. 31 drawing. The number of $1 million prizes increases to 12 and will be awarded in a separate drawing only if the Top Prize is won. Weekly drawings take place at 11:15 p.m. (Eastern) and tickets are available in 23 states.

This is the first time the man has won a sum this large and he is hoping it’s not his last.

“I’ll definitely keep playing. I know where the Lottery headquarters is now, so I’ll know exactly where I need to go when I hit the jackpot,” he said.

For now, the man’s winnings will go into savings. His wife is hoping she can convince him to take a trip to El Salvador.

The MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB game has a unique play style featuring three ways to win $1 million. Players can win the Top Prize that starts at $15 million and is capped at $25 million. A separate drawing, which takes place after a player wins that Top Prize, awards a minimum of 10 MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB prizes of $1 million each. Each week the Top Prize is not won, the number of $1 million prizes increases.

All players also have a shot at winning a $1 million prize on the upcoming national primetime “MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB” TV show, which will debut in February. The show will feature an audience of players randomly selected after they complete MONOPOLY-themed Property Sets and enter webcodes from their tickets at

Selected players fly to Las Vegas where the show will be taped and receive a five-day, four-night stay for two plus spending money. Billy Gardell, star of “Mike & Molly,” will host the show.
