Scratch-off Bought on a Whim Gives Cambridge Man $30,000 Win

Claims $30,000 top prize on Bonus Crossword game

Playing Maryland Lottery games is routine for a Dorchester County player, who normally tries his luck playing Pick 4. What is not routine is playing scratch-offs, which is what gave the 63-year-old a $30,000 top-prize win.

The Cambridge man hadn’t even planned to buy a scratch-off on the day Lottery luck crossed his path. He visited his regular retailer, Wawa #563, which is located at 601 Sunburst Highway in Cambridge. On a whim, the player bought a Bonus Crossword 3rd Edition scratch-off and that leap of faith landed him right in the Winner’s Circle.

The retired correctional officer scratched off his instant ticket later that day and was quite “happy and amazed” at his $30,000 discovery. When he called to share the news with his wife, she was even more excited than he was, the winner said.

He doesn’t have plans yet for his big win and is still trying to process the reality of his windfall.

The Cambridge Wawa shares in the Lottery fun. The retailer will receive a $300 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $30,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.

Plenty of prizes remain in the Bonus Crossword game, which went on sale in February. Players can try to win the three remaining top prizes along with 10 $5,000 prizes and 15 $1,000 prizes.
